THE WEEKLY KNIGHT
===================
(for November 28, 1992)
Unlike some of its Scandinavian neighbors, Norway has hardly
been known as a hotbed of chess activity. But with the recent
emergence of Simen Agdestein as a top flight Grandmaster and
an increased number of tournaments over the last few years
thanks to the efforts of organizer Arnold Eikrem, suddenly
the land of the fjords doesn't seem to be such a desolate
place for the practitioner of the royal game.
Although only 40 players turned up for Eikrem's Arnold Cup
tournament held several months ago at a ski resort in
Gausdal, the cosmopolitan nature of the crowd was certainly
noteworthy. The winner was the relatively unknown Russian IM,
Andrei Kharlov, who finished with 7 out of 9. Two of the five
GMs, Thomas Ernst from Sweden and the veteran Czech,
Vlastimil Jansa, tied with youthful Russian IM and the
highest rated participant, Sergey Tiviakov, at 6.5-2.5.
Continuing with the standings is like reading a roll call at
the United Nations: Scottish IM Paul Motwani (formerly from
South Africa) finished alone in fifth with a 6-3 score (after
losing his last two games), followed by a seven player logjam
at 5.5-3.5 consisting of Indonesian GM Adianto, Finnish GM
Westerinen, IMs Gausel (Norway), Emms (Ireland), Ward from
England and another Indonesian player, Handoko, and 16 year
old Swedish master, Patrick Lyrberg--who upset tournament
winner Kharlov.
It should be merely a matter of time before Kharlov is
awarded the GM title, having won here and tied for first at a
FIDE Category 10 event in Crimea. His tactical style was on
display at Gausdal against Kjeldsen.
